Discover rTMS: A Proven Depression Treatment

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non‑invasive, FDA‑cleared treatment for depression that is grounded in decades of neuroscience research. Developed in the 1980s and refined through years of clinical study, rTMS works by using targeted magnetic pulses to gently stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. In 2008, the FDA cleared rTMS for major depressive disorder, recognizing its safety, effectiveness, and growing role in modern mental health care.

At Braincare Performance Center, rTMS is offered as a well‑established, evidence‑based option for individuals whose depression has not fully responded to medication—or who are seeking a non‑drug approach. Treatments are performed while you are awake, require no anesthesia, and allow you to return to daily activities immediately. Our approach reflects a deep respect for the brain’s ability to change, heal, and regain balance when supported with the right technology and care.

What is rTMS?

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a proven, non‑invasive treatment that targets the brain networks involved in mood regulation. For many people, it offers a meaningful next step toward feeling clearer, steadier, and more engaged with life again.

rTMS uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain that are underactive in depression. These pulses are delivered through a treatment coil placed near the scalp. The stimulation helps support healthier brain activity patterns over time.

A typical treatment protocol consists of 30-minute sessions five times per week for 4-8 weeks, based on the physician's recommendation. Treatment is non-invasive and painless. Also, the side effects of rTMS are minimal when compared to traditional treatments.

What are the Benefits of rTMS?

While results vary, many patients report improvements such as:

• Reduced depressive symptoms

• Improved mood stability

• Increased motivation and energy

• Clearer thinking and focus

• Better emotional regulation

Progress often builds gradually over the course of treatment and may continue after the series is completed.

What is the rTMS process like?

The rTMS process at Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff includes:

 1. qEEG Brainwave Recording
A certified Neuro Technician performs a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG). The qEEG measures brain electrical activity and maps the areas that aren’t working as they should. The EKG records your heart’s electrical signals and measures brain-heart coordination. The EEG Brainwave Recording is a relaxing, painless experience.

2. Initial Clinical Evaluation
The Initial Clinical Evaluation appointment for rTMS Treatment is about 45 minutes long. During this time, you will meet with Nurse Practitioner Kayleigh Prowse for your clinical evaluation. She will answer any questions you may have and discuss your applicable treatment plan. Please note that Dr. Julie Kim, our Medical Director, oversees all treatment for each patient.

 3. Treatment
rTMS treatment is 4 - 8 weeks, depending on the patient's needs. Appointments are daily, Monday-Friday, for 35 - 40 minutes each. After each two-week treatment phase, we do a follow-up qEEG and evaluate how your brain is responding to treatment.
