Understanding How MeRT Increases the Precision of TMS Therapy

When we say that no two people are alike, this is fairly obvious from the outside. Despite varying appearances, it’s what lies below the surface, however, that really sets people apart. More specifically, we’re referring to brain activity that dictates our thoughts, emotions, cognitive function, and behaviors.

So, from our point of view, no two brains are alike, which is why the team here at Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff offers magnetic e-resonance therapy (MeRT), which takes repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) therapy to the next level.

The power of TMS therapy

Let’s first look at why transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is gaining more traction as an incredibly effective solution for mental and brain health issues that range from depression to traumatic brain injuries.

With TMS, we deliver magnetic pulses to your brain to stimulate and modify neural activity. These changes to how your neurons (brain cells) communicate with one another are designed to create positive neural pathways that improve brain function and mood regulation.

Unlike pharmacological solutions, which are systemic, with TMS we’re going straight to the source of your issue: your brain. And doing so in a way that’s noninvasive with no downtime and few side effects, which can’t be said of medications. TMS is also proving to be a great resource for treatment-resistant depression.

Building on TMS with MeRT

TMS on its own is making its mark in the field of brain and mental health and we’re pleased to build on this treatment through MeRT.

At the heart of MeRT is our ability to target very precise areas of your brain, areas that we have identified as being potentially problematic.

We get this information by first conducting a brainwave recording through a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG), a test designed to detect abnormalities in your brainwave activity. The EEG takes us only about 30 minutes to complete and the test is completely harmless. We simply place electrodes on your head that record your brain’s electrical activity.

Once we finish the EEG, we thoroughly analyze the data and then we go over our findings with you during a follow-up appointment.

During this visit, we discuss the areas of your brain where we found irregular brainwave activity and how we’re going to precisely target these areas through MeRT.

So, rather than just blanketing your brain with a magnetic field to modify the neural activity, we’re able to hone in on the right areas through MeRT for results that are not only superior, but faster.

Where MeRT excels

As a result of our ability to fine-tune TMS treatments through MeRT, we’ve helped many patients overcome serious and life-changing issues, including:
