Chronic Insomnia Q & A

What is chronic insomnia?

Insomnia makes it hard to fall or stay asleep. Most people experience insomnia occasionally, but if it happens at least three times a week for three months or longer, it’s considered chronic.

Without treatment, chronic insomnia can affect your quality of life. It makes it hard to focus, causes you to forget things, and may even impact your mood. The Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff team can identify the underlying cause of your chronic insomnia and make personalized treatment recommendations.

What are the symptoms of chronic insomnia?

Chronic insomnia symptoms include:

  • Feeling tired, unwell, or sleepy
  • Trouble remembering things
  • Delayed reactions
  • Disruptions in your social activities, work, and hobbies

As the condition worsens, you might experience mental health problems like anxiety, depression, or irritability.

MeRT Can Help

The Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff team treats chronic insomnia using an integrative, noninvasive approach. Specifically, they treat insomnia with Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT).

MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is highly effective in treating various mental health conditions and some neurological conditions. MeRT is a state-of-the-art treatment that has helped thousands of people with these conditions. The treatment is non-invasive and drug-free. MeRT is a gentle, painless treatment, and neuromodulates any abnormal or dysfunctional signals in the brain to help the brain to heal and modify behavior. Many of our patients have reported that MeRT has been life-changing for them. One of the first benefits usually noticed is that you will find yourself getting much better sleep.

Even if you lose a few hours of sleep for several nights in a row, your ability to function during the day can be adversely affected. When chronic insomnia is a problem for you, you might feel as if you are going on a downhill spiral, and you will feel much worse.

How long does it take for MeRT to work?

Appointments for MeRT treatment are scheduled every day during the first week, Monday – Friday, and will last 30 -35 minutes each. During the second week, treatments will take place Monday – Thursday, and on Friday, a follow-up EEG will be done to assess how you are responding to treatment and to see if there has been an improvement in your sleep habits.

Once the assessment period has been completed and we are seeing progress both clinically, and on the repeat qEEG, subsequent two-week treatment periods will be scheduled.  The comparison between initial and final EEGs and clinical evaluations will determine if you are responding to therapy.  We highly advise a total of six weeks of treatment (including the assessment period) for optimum and long-lasting results to take effect.

This treatment is a very safe and gentle therapy. MeRT is a cutting-edge treatment process that combines TMS, a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and an Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to analyze and formulate treatments that are tailored to each individual’s unique brain pattern.

MeRT is an emerging technology that aims to improve brain function and communication. The equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label to treat a wide variety of conditions, including sleep deprivation and insomnia.
